Safety before independence

Safety before independence

A self-guided expedition requires reliable rescues, sound route judgement and the ability to adjust plans to weather and sea conditions.

If any part of that is uncertain, add the practical Basic Safety Course before departure.

The journey

Independent days in the living Archipelago Sea.

The Finnish Archipelago Sea is one of the world’s most unique regions for self-guided multi-day kayaking. Thousands of islands stretch to the horizon: some inhabited by small island communities, many wild and quiet.

Your journey begins in Turku. We help you choose kayaks, equipment and route according to weather and experience, then transfer you to the most suitable starting point. Your driver is one of our professional guides and walks through safety, navigation and local conditions before departure.

During the expedition we provide a safety network and land support through a private messaging group, helping with weather, route choices, saunas, possible ferry connections and practical changes — without taking away the sense of independence.

How it works

Three simple steps from Turku to the islands.

1. Plan

Tell us your dates, group, skill level and wishes. We help shape a realistic and inspiring route.

2. Start well

We bring you, maps and equipment to the best starting point and go through safety, packing, route logic and conditions.

3. Paddle independently

You travel at your own rhythm while Aavameri supports you from land with weather-aware advice and practical help.

Questions guests ask

Useful answers before you book.

What skills are required

All adults taking part in the expedition need to be fluent with rescues in medium wind and wave conditions. If you do not have the necessary skills, please book a 3-4 hours Basic Safety Course as the start of day one.

What is the price

The core price is 420€ per person for three days. Extra days are 58€ per person per day. The minimum charge is for two persons. Gas and drysuits are charged separately when needed.

What does land support mean

Land support means weather-aware route advice, practical hints, safety advice and help with adjustments from shore. We keep in touch through WhatsApp, Telegram or another suitable communication app, and ask for your position each evening to increase safety. You still make the decisions on the water, but you are not left without local support.

Can we avoid wild-camping every night

Yes, when availability and route planning allow it, Aavameri can help with archipelago cottages, sauna nights, guest harbours or indoor accommodation.

Should we add the Basic Safety Course

Yes, if anyone in the group is not fully confident with rescues, towing, support strokes, manoeuvring, navigation or expedition packing. It is a practical 3–4 hour course that can be added as the start of day one. Read more about Basic Safety Course

What equipment is included

As part of the Self-guided package, you can choose to use Aavameri’s kayaks, paddles, neoprene or nylon spraydecks, buoyancy aids, safety equipment, tents, sleeping bags, lightweight inflatable sleeping mattresses, outdoor kitchens with gas burners, water storage, waterproof map sets and more. If you want gas bottles from Aavameri, we charge 9€ per 450 g bottle. After booking, we send you a form where you can tell us which equipment you wish to use.

When is it best to go?

The entire paddling season, from May to mid-September, is suitable for self-guided expeditions, and every period has its own advantages. Late May and June offer the longest days and almost continuous daylight around Midsummer. July typically brings the warmest air and water. Late August and early September often bring calmer weather and lighter winds, while the sea remains warm after summer. If your dates are flexible, contact us before booking and we will help you choose the part of the season that best matches the experience you are looking for.
