What we train

  • One self-rescue method for getting back into your kayak after a capsize
  • One pair rescue method for getting a capsized kayaker back into a dry kayak
  • Forward paddling, basic manoeuvring strokes and a basic support brace
  • Wind, waves, hypothermia, archipelago navigation, kayak handling and repairs

How the class is focused

Not everything can be covered in one 3–4 hour session. We concentrate on the skills most central to your safety and the conditions you need to paddle in.

For paddlers who want to become proficient beyond easiest conditions, Aavameri recommends the two-day basic course and intermediate course.

Who needs this course?

Anyone who wants to refresh rescue and boat-handling skills before renting or joining a self-guided expedition.

Is it enough for a self-guided expedition?

It can be part of the preparation, but self-guided expeditions also require navigation judgement and group responsibility in real sea conditions.

Will we get wet?

Yes, rescue practice usually involves getting into the water. Bring suitable clothing and a change of clothes.

What is the minimum charge?

The course is 70€ per person, with a minimum charge for two persons when arranged separately.
